The health benefits of the humble HUM!

Golden Light!

Today’s message is brought to you by a little hum I found myself experiencing whilst driving home the other day.

As I hummed, I smiled at the tune, I felt my whole body relax, I felt at peace.

I love to hum and have noticed my youngest daughter Lulu does too. I often hear her humming to herself while playing, creating or when we go on walks together. This led me to do a little bit of "research" [thanks chat GPT] to see what other benefits humming might have.

This is what AI had to say...

Health Benefits of Humming:

  1. Reducing Stress: Humming has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to counteract the "fight or flight" response triggered by stress. This can lead to a sense of relaxation and calmness.

  2. Improving Breathing: Humming encourages diaphragmatic breathing, where you use your diaphragm to breathe deeply, resulting in increased oxygen intake and better lung capacity.

  3. Enhancing Nasal Nitric Oxide: Nitric oxide is a gas that plays a crucial role in various physiological functions, including dilating blood vessels and enhancing the immune response in the respiratory system. Humming has been found to increase the production of nasal nitric oxide, which may have positive effects on overall respiratory health.

  4. Vocal Health: Humming can help warm up and maintain the flexibility of your vocal cords, potentially benefiting singers, public speakers, and individuals with certain speech disorders.

  5. Sinus Relief: Humming may help to clear the sinuses and alleviate congestion, especially when combined with specific breathing techniques.

  6. Pain Relief: Some studies suggest that humming may trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, leading to a temporary reduction in pain perception.

  7. Blood Pressure Regulation: The relaxation response elicited by humming may contribute to reducing blood pressure, which can be beneficial for individuals with hypertension.

It then of course shared a very responsible health warning...

It's important to note that while humming can offer these potential health benefits, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. If you have specific health concerns or conditions, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional. As a general practice, however, humming can be a simple and enjoyable way to promote relaxation and overall well-being.

Do you feel like adding a daily dose of humming to your "feel good" routine?

Sometimes I like to connect with the tune I'm humming and often find the tunes invite a lightness - tunes like “You are my sunshine" or "Yellow" or sometimes I'll hum a sad song when I'm feeling a bit low which prompts me to play a song and have a good cry.

Do you like to hum?

In the first week of Sacred Soul System I speak to a concept of "Heart Hum" connecting to heart space...one benefit that chat GPT didn't mention, is that the invitation a vocal hum can offer is an opportunity to connect with and open up your heart space.

Give it a try, be sure to share how it feels and reach out if you'd like me to share more on how to do this!
